ENGINEERING CALCULATORS

Estimated drag from flowing water calculator

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Estimate force in the flow direction from speed, submerged projected area and drag coefficient.

Inputs

Choose units and enter numbers. Full-width digits and fractions such as 1/8 or 1 3/8 are accepted. Changing a unit converts the entered value.

Results

Reference calculation only. Results do not certify suitability for an actual design or its safety.

Formula and applicability

q = ρ v² / 2; F = Cd q A; F[kgf] = F[N] / 9.80665; A = h b (height × width mode)

Displayed values are rounded. Diagrams illustrate the calculation conditions. Initial material and fluid properties are examples; replace them with values for the actual material, temperature and conditions.

Reference
Using this information as a reference

Equations assume particular loads, supports and deformation ranges. Check inputs, units and the applicability of each equation. Diagrams explain conditions; they are not manufacturing drawings or proof of safety.

Material values are typical values or reference ranges, not certified product properties or ready-to-use design allowables. They vary with standards, product form, dimensions, temper and temperature. Check the specifications and inspection certificates for the actual product.

Displayed safety factors and checks apply only to the supplied inputs and calculation model. They do not automatically establish the safety of a complete design, including code compliance, service life, fatigue or joints. For actual design, manufacture and use, separately verify applicable regulations and standards, product specifications, and the necessary tests and engineering review.

  • 抗力係数 Cd(条件に合わせて指定) (—)

  • 動圧 q(水圧全体ではない) (Pa)

q = ρ v² / 2; F = Cd q A; F[kgf] = F[N] / 9.80665; A = h b (height × width mode)

What this calculator does

Estimate force in the flow direction from speed, submerged projected area and drag coefficient.

Inputs, outputs and applicability

The selected model determines which of these inputs and outputs apply. Use the working diagram and input panel above to calculate.

Inputs

  • Projected-area input (—)
  • Flow speed relative to the object v (m/s / km/h / mm/s)
  • Water density ρ (example) (kg/m³ / g/cm³ / g/L)
  • Drag coefficient Cd (match the conditions) (—)
  • Submerged projected area A (m² / cm² / mm²)
  • Submerged projected height h (m / mm / ft)
  • Combined projected solid width b (excluding gaps) (m / mm / ft)

Calculated results

  • Force in the flow direction F (N)
  • Force equivalent (kgf, not mass kg) (kgf)
  • Projected area A used in the calculation (m²)
  • Dynamic pressure q (not total water pressure) (Pa)

Formula overview

q = ρ v² / 2; F = Cd q A; F[kgf] = F[N] / 9.80665; A = h b (height × width mode)

Estimates drag on a stationary object in uniform, steady flow. Match the Cd definition to the reference area. h is the submerged height of the object, not necessarily total river depth. b is the combined solid width normal to flow, excluding gaps; do not multiply by the object count again. No area or Cd is inferred from human height. Density depends on temperature and salinity. Buoyancy, footing friction, posture, clothing, nonuniform flow, waves, impacts and debris are separate. This does not determine whether a person can stand, cross safely or avoid tipping.

The displayed formula and conditions in the working panel apply to the currently selected model. Reference calculation only; it does not certify a complete design.
