Navier solution for an isotropic thin plate supported along all four complete edges.
Inputs, outputs and applicability
The selected model determines which of these inputs and outputs apply. Use the working diagram and input panel above to calculate.
Inputs
- Supported span a in x (mm / cm / m)
- Supported span b in y (mm / cm / m)
- Plate thickness t (mm / cm / m)
- Uniform total pressure q including self weight (Pa / kPa / MPa)
- Young modulus E (GPa / MPa / Pa)
- Poisson ratio ν (—)
- Allowable centre equivalent bending stress (MPa / GPa / Pa)
- Centre deflection limit δlim (mm / cm / m)
Calculated results
- Centre deflection δc (maximum deflection) (mm)
- Centre von Mises bending stress σvm,c (MPa)
- Centre Mx per unit width (N·m/m)
- Centre My per unit width (N·m/m)
- Total load over the full plate (N)
- Plate bending rigidity Dp (N·m)
- Short span / thickness (—)
- Centre deflection / thickness (—)
Formula overview
Dp=Et³/[12(1−ν²)]; wmn=16q/[π⁶mnDp(m²/a²+n²/b²)²] (m,n odd); wc=Σwmn sin(mπ/2)sin(nπ/2); Mx,c=Dpπ²Σ(m²/a²+νn²/b²)wmn sin(mπ/2)sin(nπ/2); My,c: exchange x/y; σvm,c=6√(Mx,c²−Mx,cMy,c+My,c²)/t².
Homogeneous isotropic constant-thickness Kirchhoff plate. All four entire edges have w=0 and zero normal bending moment, with free in-plane motion and corners held against uplift. Odd terms m,n≤101. Stress output and comparison are at the centre only, not whole-plate maximum, corner twisting or hold-down reactions. Short-span/thickness<20 or aspect ratio>5 is excluded. Deflection/thickness>0.2 flags the small-deflection assumption. Four isolated legs, clamped edges, holes, local loads, anisotropy and shear deformation are excluded. Include self weight in q.
