ENGINEERING CALCULATORS

Parallel-key shear, bearing and required length calculator

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Check average key shear, bearing stress and required effective length.

Inputs

Choose units and enter numbers. Full-width digits and fractions such as 1/8 or 1 3/8 are accepted. Changing a unit converts the entered value.

Results

Reference calculation only. Results do not certify suitability for an actual design or its safety.

Formula and applicability

Ft=2|T|/d; τ=Ft/(bLe); p=Ft/(cLe); Le,req=max[Ft/(bτa),Ft/(cpa)].

Displayed values are rounded. Diagrams illustrate the calculation conditions. Initial material and fluid properties are examples; replace them with values for the actual material, temperature and conditions.

Reference
Using this information as a reference

Equations assume particular loads, supports and deformation ranges. Check inputs, units and the applicability of each equation. Diagrams explain conditions; they are not manufacturing drawings or proof of safety.

Material values are typical values or reference ranges, not certified product properties or ready-to-use design allowables. They vary with standards, product form, dimensions, temper and temperature. Check the specifications and inspection certificates for the actual product.

Displayed safety factors and checks apply only to the supplied inputs and calculation model. They do not automatically establish the safety of a complete design, including code compliance, service life, fatigue or joints. For actual design, manufacture and use, separately verify applicable regulations and standards, product specifications, and the necessary tests and engineering review.

  • キーが伝える接線力 Ft (N)

  • 面圧からの必要有効長さ (mm)
  • 大きい方の許容値使用率 (%)

計算式の概要

Ft=2|T|/d; τ=Ft/(bLe); p=Ft/(cLe); Le,req=max[Ft/(bτa),Ft/(cpa)].

What this calculator does

Check average key shear, bearing stress and required effective length.

Inputs, outputs and applicability

The selected model determines which of these inputs and outputs apply. Use the working diagram and input panel above to calculate.

Inputs

  • Transmitted torque T (N·m / N·mm / mN·m)
  • Shaft diameter d (mm / cm / m)
  • Key width b (mm / cm / m)
  • Effective load-carrying length Le (mm / cm / m)
  • Actual engaged depth c on the side being checked (mm / cm / m)
  • Entered allowable shear stress τa (MPa / GPa / Pa)
  • Allowable bearing pressure pa for that contact side (MPa / GPa / Pa)

Calculated results

  • Average key shear stress τ (MPa)
  • Average bearing pressure p on the stated side (MPa)
  • Required effective length for both limits (mm)
  • Transmitted tangential force Ft (N)
  • Length required by shear (mm)
  • Length required by bearing (mm)
  • Larger utilization against entered limits (%)

Formula overview

Ft=2|T|/d; τ=Ft/(bLe); p=Ft/(cLe); Le,req=max[Ft/(bτa),Ft/(cpa)].

One parallel key with uniform average load sharing. Le excludes ineffective rounded ends. Enter actual engaged depth c, not automatically half the key height. Check shaft and hub sides separately if depth or allowable differs. Shaft weakening, stress concentration, fatigue, shock, looseness and unequal sharing between multiple keys are excluded.

The displayed formula and conditions in the working panel apply to the currently selected model. Reference calculation only; it does not certify a complete design.
