ENGINEERING CALCULATORS

Shock-absorber energy and repeated-duty capacity calculator

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Compare energy per impact and repeated-duty mean power from impact speed, continuing drive force and absorption stroke.

Inputs

Choose units and enter numbers. Full-width digits and fractions such as 1/8 or 1 3/8 are accepted. Changing a unit converts the entered value.

Results

Reference calculation only. Results do not certify suitability for an actual design or its safety.

Formula and applicability

Ek=mv²/2; Wd=(Fd+qmg)s, q=0(horizontal), +1(down), −1(up); E=Ek+Wd; Favg=E/s; Pavg=E/tc; me=2E/v²; tstop≈2s/v.

Displayed values are rounded. Diagrams illustrate the calculation conditions. Initial material and fluid properties are examples; replace them with values for the actual material, temperature and conditions.

Reference
Using this information as a reference

Equations assume particular loads, supports and deformation ranges. Check inputs, units and the applicability of each equation. Diagrams explain conditions; they are not manufacturing drawings or proof of safety.

Material values are typical values or reference ranges, not certified product properties or ready-to-use design allowables. They vary with standards, product form, dimensions, temper and temperature. Check the specifications and inspection certificates for the actual product.

Displayed safety factors and checks apply only to the supplied inputs and calculation model. They do not automatically establish the safety of a complete design, including code compliance, service life, fatigue or joints. For actual design, manufacture and use, separately verify applicable regulations and standards, product specifications, and the necessary tests and engineering review.

Pavg (W)
  • 平均吸収反力 Favg(最大反力ではない) (N)

Ek=mv²/2; Wd=(Fd+qmg)s, q=0(horizontal), +1(down), −1(up); E=Ek+Wd; Favg=E/s; Pavg=E/tc; me=2E/v²; tstop≈2s/v.

What this calculator does

Compare energy per impact and repeated-duty mean power from impact speed, continuing drive force and absorption stroke.

Inputs, outputs and applicability

Inputs

  • Direction of motion during absorption
  • Moving mass m at impact
  • Speed v at initial contact
  • Actually used absorption stroke s
  • Continuing drive force Fd along motion
  • Time tc between consecutive impacts
  • Entered single-impact energy limit Ecap (example)
  • Entered repeated-duty mean-power limit Pcap (example)

Results

  • Required energy E per impact (J)
  • Repeated-duty mean absorption power Pavg (W)
  • Mean absorber reaction Favg (not peak) (N)
  • Kinetic energy Ek at initial contact (J)
  • Work Wd of drive force and gravity during absorption (J)
  • Equivalent mass me for this energy and speed (kg)
  • Single-impact energy limit / demand (—)
  • Mean-power limit / demand (—)
  • Stopping time for a constant-deceleration approximation (s)

Ek=mv²/2; Wd=(Fd+qmg)s, q=0(horizontal), +1(down), −1(up); E=Ek+Wd; Favg=E/s; Pavg=E/tc; me=2E/v²; tstop≈2s/v.

One absorber stopping linear motion after contact. v is speed at contact, not at the start of a fall. Fd is constant along motion; gravity work is added/subtracted only for vertical modes. Compare both single-impact energy and repeated mean power with product limits applicable to actual use. Divide J/min by 60, or J/h by 3600, to obtain W. Entered limits are examples, not product data. Favg is a stroke average, not peak reaction or mount design load. Check equivalent mass, permitted speed range, pushing force, temperature, reset time, life and mechanical stops separately. Reject upward cases that cannot reach the entered stroke and periods no greater than the constant-deceleration stopping-time estimate.
