Material properties and comparison

Explore uses, characteristics, properties and processing to support material choices and calculations.

Material values are reference information. They do not certify product quality, suitability for a design or safety.

Material selection, processes and included grades

Values are references for the stated conditions. General comparison ranges are separate from product-specific calculation references.

Die casting materials

Compare ADC aluminium, ZDC/ZAMAK zinc and AZ/AM magnesium alloys. Review stiffness, corrosion, surface treatment and casting conditions as well as weight.

Find die casting materials

Investment casting materials

Investment casting is a process, not a grade. Distinguish SCS stainless and SCH heat-resistant cast steels from related SUS wrought grades.

Aluminium extrusion alloys

Candidates for constant-section frames, bars and tubes include EN AW-6060, 6005A and 6082. Compare temper, wall thickness, finish and welded condition.

Sand and permanent-mould casting alloys

Distinguish AC casting alloys from ADC die casting grades. Check heat treatment, porosity, machining allowance and test-bar versus actual-part conditions.

Getting started: density, modulus and allowable stress

Density is mass per volume; modulus describes elastic stiffness. Neither is strength or allowable stress.

Allowable stress depends on code, temperature, load duration, repeated loads and joints. Plastics require test-method, moisture and creep checks.

General material comparison ranges are separate from product-specific calculation references. They do not certify another grade or temper.

Using this information as a reference

Equations assume particular loads, supports and deformation ranges. Check inputs, units and the applicability of each equation. Diagrams explain conditions; they are not manufacturing drawings or proof of safety.

Material values are typical values or reference ranges, not certified product properties or ready-to-use design allowables. They vary with standards, product form, dimensions, temper and temperature. Check the specifications and inspection certificates for the actual product.

Displayed safety factors and checks apply only to the supplied inputs and calculation model. They do not automatically establish the safety of a complete design, including code compliance, service life, fatigue or joints. For actual design, manufacture and use, separately verify applicable regulations and standards, product specifications, and the necessary tests and engineering review.
