Ratchet and pawls:Follow the driving and holding pawls
A blue lever oscillates to advance the red wheel one tooth per cycle. The driving pawl rides over a tooth on return; the fixed holding pawl stays in the position that prevents reverse motion. Tooth count changes the angle advanced per cycle.

At 1×, 15 cycles/min takes 4 seconds per open–close cycle. Playback scale changes elapsed time only, not the motion relationship. Drawing scale stays fixed during playback.

R: 10–1,000 mm; integer tooth count z: 8–60; rate: 0.1–3,000 cycles/min. One tooth is advanced per cycle.
What to watch
In the first half-cycle the blue lever and red wheel advance together. In the second, the wheel stops while the driving pawl rides back over a tooth. Green marks the fixed holding pawl.
Motion model & scope
One index is 2π/z. The lever follows a prescribed cosine stroke over this angle; the wheel follows during advance and is held during return. Pawl tips are intersections of a circle about each pawl pivot with the rotated tooth profile, including during return. The ideal indexing law assumes spring-maintained contact/seating and no backlash, with instantaneous seating transitions. Impact, friction, springs, load capacity and losses are not calculated. Reverse drive is outside this one-way model.
