Geneva mechanism:Index, then dwell

The output wheel turns only while the blue drive pin engages a radial slot. Each input revolution advances one slot, followed by a dwell. Changing the slot count changes the index angle and the moving and stationary durations.

At 1×, 15 rpm takes 4 seconds per cycle. Playback scale changes elapsed time only, not the motion relationship. Drawing scale stays fixed during playback.

C: 10–10,000 mm; N: integer 4–12; speed: 0.1–3,000 rpm. Crank radius is set automatically from C and N.

What to watch

Blue input speed is constant. Red output accelerates, decelerates, then stops. Watch the red marker stay still after the pin leaves the slot.

Motion model & scope

An external Geneva mechanism with radial slots. For slot count N and centre distance C, crank radius is set to r = C sin(π/N), giving zero output velocity at entry and exit. Index angle is 360°/N. Dwell assumes a locking mechanism, whose disc is omitted. Wheel outline, pin diameter and slot width illustrate connectivity and are not manufacturing geometry. Friction, impact, load capacity and collisions are not calculated.
