Find area, I and Z from a section shape

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Match the diagram conditions, then follow the example inputs and results. Change numerical values in the calculator.

1. Match the diagram to your question

Find area, I and Z from a section shapeFront view of section

View the section straight on. Holes are subtracted as missing material.

Blue marks inputs; orange marks outputs. These diagrams explain the fixed example below; dimensions and deformation are not drawn to physical scale.

Section shape: rectangle

2. Example inputs

Width B
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

50 mm
Height H
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

100 mm

These are fixed teaching inputs. Coefficients, properties and comparison limits are not recommendations. Enter your conditions in the calculator.

3. Results for this example

Area A
5,000 mm²
Centroidal Ix
4,166,670 mm⁴
Elastic modulus Zx, top
83,333.3 mm³

This example is a 50 mm by 100 mm rectangle. Use I and Z about the same bending axis. Centroid coordinates are measured from the diagram reference.

4. Which formula is used?

A = ΣAi, x̄ = ΣAi xi / A, Ix = Σ(Ixi + Ai Δyi²), Z = I / c, r = √(I / A)

Table units are not always the units required in the formula. The calculator converts selected units to its internal base units before computing.

Assumptions and exclusions

Ideal homogeneous sections without corner radii, fillets, taper, local buckling or plastic section properties. Z is the elastic section modulus. Principal properties are displayed, but unsymmetric sections with nonzero Ixy do not feed the basic beam or column calculation directly. Free sections use straight polygon edges and holes.
