Separate peak and RMS torque in repeated motion

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Match the diagram conditions, then follow the example inputs and results. Change numerical values in the calculator.

1. Match the diagram to your question

Separate peak and RMS torque in repeated motiontnUse the time of each interval

One cycle contains acceleration, running, deceleration and dwell. The horizontal axis is time.

Blue marks inputs; orange marks outputs. These diagrams explain the fixed example below; dimensions and deformation are not drawn to physical scale.

2. Example inputs

Total motor-shaft-equivalent inertia J
What goes here?

Rotational inertia about the stated axis, depending on shape and distance from the axis as well as mass. kg·m² differs from mm⁴.

0.02 kg·m²
Resistance opposing positive rotation
What goes here?

Turning effect about an axis: force multiplied by its perpendicular moment arm.

1 N·m
Peak motor speed
What goes here?

Rotational speed, for example revolutions per minute (rpm), rather than an angle.

1,500 rpm
Acceleration duration
What goes here?

Duration of this phase or operation. Distinguish one-way from round-trip time and running from dwell.

0.5 s
Cruise duration
What goes here?

Duration of this phase or operation. Distinguish one-way from round-trip time and running from dwell.

1 s
Deceleration duration
What goes here?

Duration of this phase or operation. Distinguish one-way from round-trip time and running from dwell.

0.5 s
Dwell duration
What goes here?

Duration of this phase or operation. Distinguish one-way from round-trip time and running from dwell.

1 s
Holding torque during dwell
What goes here?

Turning effect about an axis: force multiplied by its perpendicular moment arm.

0 N·m

These are fixed teaching inputs. Coefficients, properties and comparison limits are not recommendations. Enter your conditions in the calculator.

3. Results for this example

Peak absolute torque
7.28319 N·m
Whole-cycle RMS torque
3.71835 N·m
Deceleration torque (negative = regenerative)
-5.28319 N·m

Peak torque is the greatest magnitude; RMS describes the complete cycle. Negative deceleration torque acts against positive rotation.

4. Which formula is used?

Ta=TL+Jω/ta; Td=TL−Jω/td; Trms=√[Σ(Ti²ti)/Σti]; Eregen=max(0,−Td)ωtd/2

Table units are not always the units required in the formula. The calculator converts selected units to its internal base units before computing.

Assumptions and exclusions

All inputs refer to the same motor shaft; gearbox efficiency is not reapplied. Constant resistance opposes positive motion. Reversing gravity loads, electrical regenerative capacity and motor thermal ratings require separate evaluation.
