Estimate cylinder bore from required force

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Match the diagram conditions, then follow the example inputs and results. Change numerical values in the calculator.

1. Match the diagram to your question

Estimate cylinder bore from required forceCutaway: inside the cylinder

This calculation starts with required force and estimates a cylinder bore.

Blue marks inputs; orange marks outputs. These diagrams explain the fixed example below; dimensions and deformation are not drawn to physical scale.

2. Example inputs

Required extension thrust
What goes here?

Magnitude of a push or pull, in force units such as N, rather than mass in kg.

500 N
Supply gauge pressure
What goes here?

Force per area. Gauge pressure is relative to ambient; absolute pressure is relative to vacuum.

0.5 MPa
Exhaust back pressure (gauge)
What goes here?

Force per area. Gauge pressure is relative to ambient; absolute pressure is relative to vacuum.

0.05 MPa
Friction and other force loss
What goes here?

Magnitude of a push or pull, in force units such as N, rather than mass in kg.

30 N
Rod diameter d
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

16 mm
Target extension speed v
What goes here?

Distance travelled per time. Check whether the field asks for initial, final or constant speed.

0.1 m/s
Ambient absolute pressure
What goes here?

Force per area. Gauge pressure is relative to ambient; absolute pressure is relative to vacuum.

0.101325 MPa

These are fixed teaching inputs. Coefficients, properties and comparison limits are not recommendations. Enter your conditions in the calculator.

3. Results for this example

Calculated required bore
38.3556 mm
Volume flow at supply pressure
6.93263 L/min
Required flow at ambient pressure, same temperature
41.1425 L/min

The first result is a calculated bore, not a standard product size or selected model. Read it together with pressure, back pressure, loss and speed.

4. Which formula is used?

A=[F+Floss−pb·Arod]/(p−pb); D=√(4A/π); Q=A v; Qref=Q(p+pamb)/pamb

Table units are not always the units required in the formula. The calculator converts selected units to its internal base units before computing.

Assumptions and exclusions

Extension only. Require p > pb ≥ 0 and calculated bore > rod diameter. Valve/piping flow characteristics and pressure transients are excluded. Required flow differs from average air consumption.
