Air used for one cylinder round trip

Engineering calculators (Beta)

Match the diagram conditions, then follow the example inputs and results. Change numerical values in the calculator.

1. Match the diagram to your question

Air used for one cylinder round tripCutaway: inside the cylinder

Extension and return together make one cycle. The two chambers have different swept volumes.

Blue marks inputs; orange marks outputs. These diagrams explain the fixed example below; dimensions and deformation are not drawn to physical scale.

2. Example inputs

Cylinder bore D
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

40 mm
Rod diameter d
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

16 mm
Stroke L
What goes here?

Use the dimension marked in the diagram. Distinguish radius from diameter, bore from outside diameter, and overall length from support span.

100 mm
Supply gauge pressure pg
What goes here?

Force per area. Gauge pressure is relative to ambient; absolute pressure is relative to vacuum.

0.5 MPa
Ambient absolute pressure
What goes here?

Force per area. Gauge pressure is relative to ambient; absolute pressure is relative to vacuum.

0.101325 MPa
Cycle rate c (one extension + return)
What goes here?

Match the field symbol to the diagram and check dimensions, specifications or operating conditions. Replace example numbers with your actual conditions.

10 cycles/min
Cylinder air temperature T
What goes here?

Match the field symbol to the diagram and check dimensions, specifications or operating conditions. Replace example numbers with your actual conditions.

20 °C
Reference absolute pressure pref

0.101325 MPa
Reference temperature Tref

Match the field symbol to the diagram and check dimensions, specifications or operating conditions. Replace example numbers with your actual conditions.

20 °C

These are fixed teaching inputs. Coefficients, properties and comparison limits are not recommendations. Enter your conditions in the calculator.

3. Results for this example

Reference volume per cycle
1.37221 L/cycle
Reference consumption rate
13.7221 L/min

One cycle includes extension and return. Volume is at the stated reference pressure and temperature and excludes piping volume and leakage.

4. Which formula is used?

Vs = π(2D²−d²)L/4; Vref = Vs(pg+pamb)/pref × Tref/T; Qref = Vref c

Table units are not always the units required in the formula. The calculator converts selected units to its internal base units before computing.

Assumptions and exclusions

Ideal dry gas with both chambers filled to supply pressure once per cycle. Temperatures are converted to kelvin. Piping, dead volume, leakage, cushioning and humidity are excluded. This is an explicit reference state, not a certified ANR flow or a valve peak-flow selection.
